我們小時候的玩具,都是自己做的,也只能自己做。

When we were small, all our toys were made by ourselves, and that was the only way we had toys to play。

只要有一個人做了一件新鮮玩意兒,大家看了有趣,很快就能風靡全班,以至全校。

As long as one person came up with a new plaything and everyone found it fun, then it would become all the rage with the entire class or even the whole school。

Next, we would drill a pair of small holes in it to be used for installing arms。

Then we would saw eight more short pieces for the four limbs。

Finally we would link them together with a string used for sewing up soles of shoes。

That would do it。

鋸的時候要小心,

Be careful in sawing。

If they had been cracked, then all the hard work would be for naught。

It looked imposing with crossed-legs and stretched-out-arms that would rival a young fellow with thick neck and bulged muscles in a bodybuilding competition nowadays。

將鞋線一鬆一緊,那竹節人就手舞之、身擺之地動起來。

By pulling tight and letting loose the shoe string, the bamboo-man would be flailing its arms and wriggling its body。

兩個竹節人放在一起,那就是搏鬥了,沒頭沒腦地對打著,不知疲倦,也永不會倒下。

In putting two bamboo-men together, they would engage in a combat—the sort of no holds barred fight that knew no fatigue or collapse。

Sometimes one of the strings got stuck, then the “gladiator” would look like a retarded idiot that stuck out his belly to take punches。

竹節人手上繫上一根冰棒棒兒,就成了手握金箍棒的孫悟空,號稱“齊天小聖”,

If a bamboo-man‘s hand is tied onto a Popsicle stick, then it would become a cudgel-holding Monkey King, a。k。a。 “Heaven-Great Little Saint”。

四個字歪歪斜斜刻在竹節人背上,

Those four characters would be carved askew on its back。

神氣!

Wasn’t that impressive?

找到兩根針織機上廢棄的鉤針,裝在竹節人手上,就成了竇爾敦的虎頭雙鉤。

Upon finding two discarded crochets from a knitting machine and installing them in the hands of a bamboo-man, then they would become Dou Erdun’s two tiger-hooks。

把“金鉤大王”刻在竹節人的胸口,神氣!

Once the term “Golden Hook King” was carved on the chest of the bamboo-man, it would look absolutely stunning。

A crescent-moon sword was cut out from a lead-sheet along with a snake-spear which was made from a iron-wire decorated with a tassel of red silk-threads。

Then a striking, intimidating, and ringing name would be conjured up by racking one’s brain。

Broken classroom desks would become ancient battlefield where heroes were made。

還有同學別出心裁,想技高一籌,給竹節人粘上一個橡皮擦雕成的腦袋,做一套紙盔甲。

Some students got creative to show up others by gluing a head made from eraser to his bamboo-man and even made a paper armor。

一有機會,便得意揚揚招呼大夥兒來觀摩。

Whenever an opportunity arose, he would proudly beckon everyone to come over and admire it。

誰知弄巧成拙,中看不中用,

Who would have thought this masterpiece turned out to be a screwup that was all show and no substance。

沒打幾個回合,那粘上的腦袋連盔甲被它自己手裡的大刀磕飛了,於是對方大呼勝利。

Within a few rounds, the glued-on head and the armor were knocked off by its own big sword, and so the opponent loudly declared victory。

其實,竹節人的動作壓根兒不由扯線人做主,那不過是在竹節間的線一緊一鬆間的胡亂聳動而已,

The reality was the actions of the bamboo-man were not controlled by the person pulling the string, but by random movements in tightening and loosening the cord。

可看上去,卻挺像是那麼回事。

But looking at it on the surface, it did seem like the person was in command。

黑虎掏心!泰山壓頂!雙龍搶珠!

There were martial arts moves like “Black tiger disemboweling a heart”, “Mount Tai crushing down from atop” and “Two dragons fighting for a pearl”。

Without further ado, our masterfully created bamboo-men which had earned many stripes on battlefields and were still being engaged in a bitter combat were captured。

下課後,眼巴巴看別的同學重新開戰,

After class, the two of us could only watch helplessly as other students resumed battling。

玩得歡,不禁沮喪得要命,

Seeing their joy in playing, we couldn’t help but felt extremely depressed。

便一起悄悄溜到辦公室窗戶下的冬青叢裡轉悠,希望老師能像往常一樣,把沒收的東西扯散了,隨手扔出窗外。

So, together we quietly sneaked up to the holly bush under the office’s window in hope that the teacher would, like what he normally did, tear apart the confiscated things and casually throw them out the window。

全神貫注,忘乎所以,一點兒也沒注意到我們在偷看。

He was entirely mesmerized and didn’t notice anything else around him, much less we were peeking at him。

He had the look on his face that we had when we were totally enthralled in playing。
