我們小時候的玩具，都是自己做的，也只能自己做。
When we were small， all our toys were made by ourselves， and that was the only way we had toys to play。
只要有一個人做了一件新鮮玩意兒，大家看了有趣，很快就能風靡全班，以至全校。
As long as one person came up with a new plaything and everyone found it fun， then it would become all the rage with the entire class or even the whole school。

有一段時間，我們全迷上了鬥竹節人。
For a while， we were all hooked on bamboo-section-man。

把毛筆桿鋸成寸把長的截，
We would saw the stem of a brush into a section that was a bit more than an inch long。
這就是竹節人的腦袋連同身軀了，
That would be the bamboo-man’s head and body。
在上面鑽一對小眼，供裝手臂用。
Next， we would drill a pair of small holes in it to be used for installing arms。
再鋸八截短的，分別做四肢，
Then we would saw eight more short pieces for the four limbs。
用一根納鞋底的線把它們穿在一起，
Finally we would link them together with a string used for sewing up soles of shoes。
就成了。
That would do it。
鋸的時候要小心，
Be careful in sawing。
弄不好一個個崩裂，前功盡棄。
If they had been cracked， then all the hard work would be for naught。

By planting the shoe-string that went through the nine bamboo sections into a desk’s crack and pulling it tight from down below， the bamboo-man that stood on the crack would be straightened up like a strongman。
叉腿張胳膊，威風凜凜，跟現今健美比賽中那脖子老粗、渾身疙瘩肉的小夥子差不多。
It looked imposing with crossed-legs and stretched-out-arms that would rival a young fellow with thick neck and bulged muscles in a bodybuilding competition nowadays。

將鞋線一鬆一緊，那竹節人就手舞之、身擺之地動起來。
By pulling tight and letting loose the shoe string， the bamboo-man would be flailing its arms and wriggling its body。
兩個竹節人放在一起，那就是搏鬥了，沒頭沒腦地對打著，不知疲倦，也永不會倒下。
In putting two bamboo-men together， they would engage in a combat—the sort of no holds barred fight that knew no fatigue or collapse。

有時其中一個的線卡住了，那“鬥士”便顯出一副呆頭呆腦的傻樣子，挺著肚子淨捱揍。
Sometimes one of the strings got stuck， then the “gladiator” would look like a retarded idiot that stuck out his belly to take punches。

竹節人手上繫上一根冰棒棒兒，就成了手握金箍棒的孫悟空，號稱“齊天小聖”，
If a bamboo-man‘s hand is tied onto a Popsicle stick， then it would become a cudgel-holding Monkey King， a。k。a。 “Heaven-Great Little Saint”。
四個字歪歪斜斜刻在竹節人背上，
Those four characters would be carved askew on its back。
神氣！

找到兩根針織機上廢棄的鉤針，裝在竹節人手上，就成了竇爾敦的虎頭雙鉤。
Upon finding two discarded crochets from a knitting machine and installing them in the hands of a bamboo-man， then they would become Dou Erdun’s two tiger-hooks。
把“金鉤大王”刻在竹節人的胸口，神氣！
Once the term “Golden Hook King” was carved on the chest of the bamboo-man， it would look absolutely stunning。

用鉛皮剪一把偃月刀，用鐵絲系一綹紅絲線做一柄蛇矛，
A crescent-moon sword was cut out from a lead-sheet along with a snake-spear which was made from a iron-wire decorated with a tassel of red silk-threads。

It was mounted on a bamboo-man。
再挖空心思取一個更威風、更嚇人、叫得更響的名號。
Then a striking， intimidating， and ringing name would be conjured up by racking one’s brain。

破課桌，儼然一個叱吒風雲的古戰場。
Broken classroom desks would become ancient battlefield where heroes were made。
還有同學別出心裁，想技高一籌，給竹節人粘上一個橡皮擦雕成的腦袋，做一套紙盔甲。
Some students got creative to show up others by gluing a head made from eraser to his bamboo-man and even made a paper armor。
一有機會，便得意揚揚招呼大夥兒來觀摩。
Whenever an opportunity arose， he would proudly beckon everyone to come over and admire it。
誰知弄巧成拙，中看不中用，
Who would have thought this masterpiece turned out to be a screwup that was all show and no substance。
沒打幾個回合，那粘上的腦袋連盔甲被它自己手裡的大刀磕飛了，於是對方大呼勝利。
Within a few rounds， the glued-on head and the armor were knocked off by its own big sword， and so the opponent loudly declared victory。

其實，竹節人的動作壓根兒不由扯線人做主，那不過是在竹節間的線一緊一鬆間的胡亂聳動而已，
The reality was the actions of the bamboo-man were not controlled by the person pulling the string， but by random movements in tightening and loosening the cord。
可看上去，卻挺像是那麼回事。
But looking at it on the surface， it did seem like the person was in command。

黑虎掏心！泰山壓頂！雙龍搶珠！
There were martial arts moves like “Black tiger disemboweling a heart”， “Mount Tai crushing down from atop” and “Two dragons fighting for a pearl”。

咚鏘咚鏘咚咚鏘！咚咚鏘！
At the same time， they were shouting： “Dong qiang， dong qiang， dong dong qiang！ Dong dong qiang！”

下課時，教室裡擺開場子，吸引了一圈黑腦袋，攢著觀戰，
During breaks between classes， the stages were set in the classrooms which attracted a group of black-haired spectators crowding around to watch the battles。
還跺腳拍手，咋咋呼呼，好不熱鬧。
They were stamping their feet， clapping their hands， and hollering aloud。
常要等老師進來，才知道已經上課，便一鬨作鳥獸散。
Often it wasn’t until the teacher came in before they would realize that class had already started and they just scattered quickly。

Even during class， my enthusiasm had not waned， and I was itching for more actions。
將課本豎在面前當屏風，跟同桌在課桌上又搏將起來，這會兒，嘴裡不便咚鏘。
I put the textbook upright in front as a screen and continued to slug it out with my desk-mate， except I no longer blurted out “dong quiang”

Only this time the classmate at the back was not alert。

In getting engrossed in watching， he stretched his neck in an attempt to look closer over our shoulders。

He was caught by the watchful teacher who noticed something fishy had to be going on。

At the speed of a meteor， the teacher strode over。
怒氣衝衝伸手一拂，“屏風”頹然倒了，一切秘密暴露無遺。
With a brush of his hand angrily， the “screen” collapsed and all the secrets were exposed in full view。
不消說，費了許多功夫做出來的，建立了赫赫偉績，鏖戰猶酣的兩個竹節人被一把抓去。
Without further ado， our masterfully created bamboo-men which had earned many stripes on battlefields and were still being engaged in a bitter combat were captured。

下課後，眼巴巴看別的同學重新開戰，
After class， the two of us could only watch helplessly as other students resumed battling。
玩得歡，不禁沮喪得要命，
Seeing their joy in playing， we couldn’t help but felt extremely depressed。
便一起悄悄溜到辦公室窗戶下的冬青叢裡轉悠，希望老師能像往常一樣，把沒收的東西扯散了，隨手扔出窗外。
So， together we quietly sneaked up to the holly bush under the office’s window in hope that the teacher would， like what he normally did， tear apart the confiscated things and casually throw them out the window。

蹲著身子，瞪大眼，可一無所獲。
I squatted down and opened my eyes wide， but I couldn’t find anything。
正悻悻然準備離去，卻見同桌趴在窗玻璃旁看得津津有味。
Just when I was about to leave in frustration， I saw that my desk-mate was lying on his stomach totally absorbed in watching through the glass of the window。

I went over and poke my head to look， and wouldn’t you know what I saw。

只見老師在他自己的辦公桌上，玩著剛才收去的那竹節人。
The teacher was on his own desk playing with the bamboo-men that he took away from us not too long ago。
雙手在抽屜裡扯著線，嘴裡唸唸有詞，
His two hands were in the drawer pulling the strings while mumbling something。
全神貫注，忘乎所以，一點兒也沒注意到我們在偷看。
He was entirely mesmerized and didn’t notice anything else around him， much less we were peeking at him。

He had the look on his face that we had when we were totally enthralled in playing。

Therefore my desk-mate and I looked at each other and smiled knowingly。

Even though we went away empty-handedly， but we were perfectly satisfied and stealthily slipped away。
