一、telegram與telegraph 的用法區別

兩者均可表示“電報”，但 telegram 指透過電報發出的電文，通常用作可數名詞;而 telegraph 則指用電報傳送資訊的通訊方式，通常用作不可數名詞。

如：

She received a telegram of congratulations。 她收到一份祝賀電報。

The telegraph has been cut between the two cities。 這兩座城市之間的電報業務已中斷。

表示“透過電報”，本來應該用 by telegraph，但事實上也可用 by telegram。

如：He told us the news by telegram ［=by telegraph］。 他用電報告訴我們這條訊息。

二、matter與affair的用法區別

兩者均可表示“事情”、“事件”，其用法既有交叉的地方，也有不同的地方，使用時應注意以下幾點：

1. 表示需要注意或重視的事情、商務性的事等，兩者均可用。

如：

It’s a matter ［an affair］ of great importance。 這是一件非常重要的事。

They talked about business matters ［affairs］。 他們談論了商務問題。

注：在口語中，含混地表示“事情”，也可用兩者。如：

It’s a regretful affair ［matter］。 那是件遺憾的事。

2. 表示“事務”(可大至國家政府機關的事務，小至個人的事務)，通常用 affair(一般用複數形式)。

如：

They have no right to interfere in the internal affairs of China。 他們無權干涉中國內政。

He left his affairs in the hands of his son。 他把事務交給他兒子了。

3. 表示個人的事，通常用 affair。

如：

This is my affair， not theirs。 這是我的事，不關他們的事。

注：有時也用 matter，但通常有 personal， private 等表示個人的形容詞修飾。如：

It’s a private affair ［matter］。 這是私事。

4. 若指麻煩事，只能用 matter (與定冠詞連用)，若指男女間的韻事或桃色事件，則只能用 affair。

如：

What’s the matter with you？ 你怎麼啦？

There’s something the matter with it。 它出問題了。

It’s said that he is having affairs with her。 據說他與她有曖昧關係。
