讀傳記，學英文-moonlight與工作

上一章中，沃茲能在幾天內就設計出來了使用更少晶片的遊戲。可見，沃茲的才能和技術。

沃茲是一個更懂電子的工程師，而喬布斯則更擅長工程設計。在開創蘋果的道路上，沃茲提供了極大的技術支援。

在1975年，沃茲早已經是惠普的工程師了。在這期間，一個俱樂部的產生也推動了計算機的發展。

以下中文翻譯部分來自中文版《喬布斯傳》。

The group became known as the Homebrew Computer Club， and it encapsulated the Whole Earth fusion between the counterculture and technology。 It would become to the personal computer era something akin to what the Turk’s Head coffeehouse was to the age of Dr。 Johnson， a place where ideas were exchanged and disseminated。

新成立的組織叫做家釀計算機俱樂部（The Homebrew Computer Club），它如同《全球概覽》一般，融合了反主流文化與科技。 這個俱樂部之於個人電腦時代，就如同土耳其人咖啡館（Turk’s Head coffee-house）之於約翰遜博士（Dr. Johnson那個時代，思想在其間得以交流和傳播。

►encapsulate v 壓縮，講……封進內部

這個單詞由字首en-+capsulate構成。en-表強調， capsulate 來自capsule 膠囊

►這段還有一個句型：A is to B what C is to D。A 之於 B就像C 之於D。

比如：食物對於身體正如讀書對於知識。

翻譯成：Food is to the body whatreading to knowledge。

After work each day，Wozniak would go home for a TV dinner and then return to HP to moonlight on his computer。 He spread out the parts in his cubicle， figured out their placement， and soldered themonto his motherboard。

每天下班以後，沃茲尼亞克就回到家，一邊看電視一邊吃晚飯，然後就回到惠普公司連夜研究他的計算機。 他把零件散佈在他的小隔間裡，搞清楚它們放置的部位，然後焊到主機板上去。

►moonlight 你想不到它還有動詞的意思吧？但是它動詞的意思和moonlight本身“月光”的意思有關係。

moonlight來源於19世紀，指“小偷經常在夜晚偷東西”。

而到1957年，《時代週刊》雜誌給moonlight這個單詞一個全新的釋義-working multiple jobs，即做多個工作，即“從事第二職業，做副業”。

雖然釋義和最初的含義不一樣，但是也是有一定的聯絡的。

因為，現在很多人的兼職工作都是在白天全職工作結束後，才開始的，所以一般也到了晚上月亮出來的時候了。

比如，

。In addition to her teaching job， she moonlights as a waitress onweekends。-除了教書的工作，她還在週末兼職當服務員。

下次，你想說做兼職，或者兼職做……，就可以用moonlight喔！

Then he began writing the software that would get the microprocessor to display images on the screen。 Because he could not afford to pay for computer time， he wrote the code by hand。

之後他開始編寫軟體程式，能夠讓微處理器在螢幕上顯示影象。因為承擔不起使用電腦的花費，他所有的程式碼都是手寫的。幾個月之後，他準備好測試了。

After a couple of months he was ready to test it。 “I typed a few keys on the keyboard and I was shocked！ The letters were displayed on the screen。” It was Sunday， June 29，1975， a milestone for the personal computer。

“It was the first time in history，” Wozniak later said， “anyone had typed a character on a keyboard and seen it show up on their own computer’s screen right in front of them。”

Jobs was impressed。 He peppered Wozniak with questions：Could the computer ever be networked？ Was it possible to add a disk for memory storage？ He also began to help Woz get components。

喬布斯也大吃一驚。他連問了沃茲尼亞克好幾個問題：這臺電腦能聯網嗎？是否有可能新增一塊磁碟作為儲存器？他還開始幫沃茲尼亞克找來零件。

►pepper 難道不是“辣椒”的意思嗎？怎麼用用作了動詞？

這就是我們詞彙量低，總覺得英語閱讀難的原因，因為英語的詞彙很靈活，而且一個單詞有多個意思。

當然，很多單詞的多重釋義，並不是無跡可尋。一般從詞源的角度是可以找到其發展規律的。

那我們來看一下pepper在詞源網站上是怎麼解釋的。

pepper做動詞，表示向……上噴辣椒，而如果拿……向某人噴，會使人煩惱，即 pepper sb with sth就是追問，這裡是貶義。

Particularly important were the dynamic random-access memory chips。 Jobs made a few calls and was able to score some from Intel for free。 “Steve is just that sort of person，” said Wozniak。 “I mean， heknew how to talk to a sales representative。 I could never have done that。 I’mtoo shy。”

最為重要的就是DRAM（動態隨機存取儲存晶片）。喬布斯打了幾個電話，就免費從英特爾搞到了一些晶片。 “史蒂夫就是那樣的人，”沃茲尼亞克說，“他知道怎麼跟銷售代表說話。我就不行，我太羞澀了。”

►score是我們很熟悉的詞，名詞表示分數，二十等，動詞有“獲得”的意思。

在這段裡，score就是獲得的意思，但如果用中文更精確的說法是：搞到，淘到。

就如我們去二手店鋪淘東西一樣。看下面這個，就是指淘明星穿過的衣服，用score。
