Slack可以被用作形容詞(用來形容名詞)或副詞(用來形容動詞),也可以用作名詞。

Slack is a descriptive word so it is used as an adjective (to describe a noun) or an adverb (to describe a verb), or it can be used as a noun。

1)當它是形容詞或副詞時,用來形容不緊,鬆弛的東西。用作名詞時,表示鬆一下。

As both an adjective or an adverb, it would be used to describe something being not tight or taught; something is loose。

例如:

James tied a rope around his waist before he started to climb into the well to rescue the kitten that had fallen in。 As James descended into the well, he asked Michael who was holding the rope at the top of the well, to give him a little slack, so he could climb down further。 (Here James is asking Michael to pass down more rope so he (James) can move further down the wall of the well。 – Slack is a noun)

詹姆斯在開始爬進井裡去救掉進去的小貓之前,在腰上綁了一根繩子。當詹姆斯下到井裡時,他問正在井頂拉繩子的邁克爾,讓他稍微放鬆繩子一下,這樣他可以再往下爬。(在這裡,詹姆斯要求邁克爾放下更多的繩子,這樣他(詹姆斯)就可以沿著井壁再往下走。–Slack是一個名詞)

James stood shocked as his broken arm is slack at his side。 (Slack is an adjective)

詹姆斯震驚地站在那裡,因為他折斷的手臂垂在他身旁。(Slack是一個形容詞)

After the dance, the streamers used to decorate the hall hung slackly against the wall。 (Slack is an adverb)

舞會結束後,用來裝飾大廳的綵帶鬆垮地掛在牆上。(Slack是副詞)

2)slack這個詞也可以用來形容突然減少。

The word slack can also be used to describe a sudden decrease in activity。

例如:

When the Sales Manager told him that there were insufficient toys to fill the orders, the manager of the Production department worked hard to find out why there was a sudden slack in the output of the toys。

當銷售經理告訴他沒有足夠的玩具來滿足訂單時,生產部經理努力地想弄清楚為什麼玩具的產量突然下降了。

1)當你想說一個人應該給

別人一些自由

或者

對另一個人更寬容

時,你會說

cut…some slack

When you want to say that a person should give someone else some freedom or to be more lenient with another person, you would say that they should cut the other person some slack。

例如:

Jane was very angry with Mary for shouting at her。 Alice told Jane to

cut Mary some slack

as she was grieving for her mother。

簡對瑪麗大喊大叫很生氣。愛麗絲叫簡在瑪麗為她母親傷心的時候

對她寬容點

2)如果一個人在別人沒有完成任務的情況下承擔額外的工作,你可以說他是在收拾爛攤子,pick up the slack。

If one person takes on extra work when others have not completed a task, you could say that they were picking up the slack。

例如:

James took up the slack and looked after the household and the children when his wife fell ill with the flu。

當他妻子患上流感時,詹姆斯幫助她負擔任務,照顧家庭和孩子。

3)Slack off可以用來描述當一個人在一項任務中變得懶惰或沒有效率。

Slack off can also be used to describe when a person becomes lazy or unproductive in relation to a task。

例如:

The coach warned John that he might be a popular football player, but they did not mean that he could slack off on his training and that he had better apply himself to their training sessions。

教練警告約翰說他可能是一個受歡迎的足球運動員,但這並不意味著他可以放鬆訓練,他最好專心參加他們的訓練。
