左丁山在〈中譯英甚難〉一文說，四川大學為慶祝110年校慶，在報章上刊了半版中英對照的頭版廣告。前面四句有：岷峨挺秀，錦水含章。巍巍學府，世紀輝煌。

「岷峨」是岷山和峨眉山。形容名山的「挺秀」，英文多用lofty and majestic，錯不了的。錦水是「春色來天地」的錦江，配上「巍巍學府」，因此含章的章，不單指「采色」，還應兼含文化氣息。如果這推測不離譜，那麼「錦水含章」或可翻譯為River Jin radiates elegance。

現抄錄廣告上的英文版本：Like the distant Minshan mountain and Emei mountain so tall and graceful，along bank of the poetic Brocade River，stands Sichuan University so majestic with century glory。

篇幅所限，只能長話短說。這種用like開頭的句子，使我想到舊日美國香菸廣告Winston tastes good，like a cigarette should的惡例。話應該是這麼說的：Winston tastes good，as a cigarette should。廣告商明知故犯，只為突出like：「喜歡」。英文的usage沒有majestic with的說法。也不能說century glory。「世紀輝煌」或可說成a century of glorious achievements。

這廣告的英文，寫得最蹩腳的是這一句：In the golden autumn of 2006，the university will be greeting her 110th anniversary and holding a grand celebration ceremony then to commemorate her founding 110 years ago。

中文原文嗦，翻譯亦步亦趨。「2006年金秋時節，四川大學將迎來110週年華誕。屆時，四川大學將隆重舉行建校110週年慶典。」

這句嗦的英文，其實可以簡單的說成：The university will be celebrating in earnest the 110th anniversary of its founding in the autumn of 2006。

如要突出「隆重」，可說celebrating in grand style。若要更隆重，可說in grand style and with great pomp。但文稿是四川大學發的，這麼自我吹噓就有些失禮了，丁山兄，你說是不是？四川大學的公告，還有一段。且按你的引文錄下：having composed splendid chapters of glory and dream of modern Chinese universities in making innovation while inheriting tradition。

中文是：「譜寫了一曲曲中國現代大學繼承與創新並進、光榮與夢想交織的輝煌樂章。」

我知道這一段翻譯，問題多多，但自覺回天乏術，另請高明吧。Have a good day。 It is time to enjoy the cool breeze of autumn。
