“武漢市”用英文應該怎麼說？
有讀者提到了“the city of Wuhan”以及“Wuhan city”哪個更常用的問題：
不少同學在寫“某某市”的時候可能習慣寫XX city，但在地道英文中更常見的一個寫法其實是
the city of XX
，舉個例子，《經濟學人》在一篇報道國內樓市的文章中有這樣的句子：
The city of Zhengzhou
in central China on March 1st said it would make it easier for people to buy second homes。 In the south，
the city of Guangzhou
cut mortgage-loan rates by 20 basis points on February 22nd。
這裡分別用the city of Zhengzhou以及the city of Guangzhou來指“鄭州”和“廣州”。《中國日報》這條微博用的說法也是
the city of Hangzhou
外媒在表達“中國的某某城市”時也經常用
the Chinese city of
XX
這一結構，比如BBC的一個句子：
More than 13 million people in
the Chinese city of Xi'an
have been ordered to stay at home as authorities attempt to tackle a Covid outbreak there。
對於中國英語學習者來說，the city of XX直觀上可能不太好理解，在這一結構中of對前面的名詞起到一個補充說明的作用。比如the art of painting意思是“繪畫藝術”，其中of painting作為後置定語對art進行補充說明；the problem of unemployment意思為“失業問題”，of unemployment也作為後置定語修飾problem。同樣的道理，the city of XX結構中，of XX對city進行具體說明，指明是哪一座城市。
不僅是中國的城市如此，國外的城市也多數採用這種寫法，比如“波士頓市”是the city of Boston，“克利夫蘭市”是The city of Cleveland。不過有少數幾座城市存在
XX City
的寫法，比如“紐約市”除了可以寫成
the city of New York
，也可以寫成
New York City
，“墨西哥市”可以寫成Mexico City，此時City的首字母要大寫。
在介紹國內城市時我們除了說the city of XX之外，也可以直接說城市名，然後使用同位語做補充說明。舉個例子，你可以說：
I come from Hangzhou， one of China‘s most important tourist cities。 It is renowned for its natural beauty and classical Chinese scenery…
此外，除了介紹城市時可以使用the…of XX結構，村、鎮以及省份這些行政單位也可以用。比如要介紹“某某村”，可以寫成
the village of XX
，“某某鎮”可以說the town of XX。舉個例子，《經濟學人》上個月有一篇文章，開頭句是：
In
the village of Anbang
in Yunnan， a south-western province， people of social stature are heaving a sigh of relief。
作者用the village of Anbang in Yunnan來表示“雲南安邦村”。平時在讀外刊時遇到這樣的結構可以多留意。
