(prepared by: alexcwlin; edited by: Adam Lam)

Question:

Don‘t you remember me?

alexcwlin comments:

This is called “negative question”, and people in US and Canada ask that a lot。 Often negative questions seem to be more empathetic than a positive question。

For example:

“Don’t you know?” instead of “Do you know?”, “Can‘t you understand a simple thing like this?” instead of “Can you understand a simple thing like this?”

The difficult part often is not how to structure the question, but how to answer a negative question。

Here are some examples:

(這是一些例子)

Question: Isn’t he here?

answer: Yes, he is here。

answer: No, he isn’t here。

Question: Is it not possible?

answer: Yes, it‘s possible。

answer: No, it isn’t possible。

Question: “You did nothing, did you?”

answer: “Yes, I did something。”

answer: “No, I did nothing。”

Question: “You didn‘t do anything, did you?”

answer: “Yes, I did do something。”

answer: “No, I didn’t do anything。”

Question: Aren‘t you tired?

Possible answers: Yes [I am]。 or No [I am not]。

It is never *”Yes, I’m not” or *”No, I am。”

The best thing to do is give them a FULL answer, not just yes or no。

In most cases, it doesn’t matter if you start with yes or no。 For example:

Aren’t you finished yet? No, I still have 2 more boxes to open。 Yes, I still have 2 more boxes to open。 (native speakers will respond with no first)

You don‘t like peanuts, do you? (the speaker thinks you don’t like peanuts)

You should answer, “No, I don‘t”。 Or “No, but I like other nuts。” “No (or yes), I’m allergic to peanuts。”

On a very cold or rainy day, we might say, “It isn’t a very nice day today, is it?” expecting “No it isn’t” not “Yes (it isn‘t)”

If someone appears to be sitting at home and comfortable or sick, we might say “You don’t feel like going out shopping now do you?” expecting the answer to be “No, I don’t。” not “Yes (I don‘t)。”’

Mindful of this one:

A

negative question

is one that is worded in such a way as to require a “no” response for an affirmative answer and a “yes” response for a negative answer。

Would you mind driving me to my class at the English Island on Tuesday?

Would you mind driving me to my class at the English Island on Tuesday?

No, I don’t mind driving you。

Yes, I do mind。 I have an appointment at that same time。
