戰爭+年份，如何翻譯？

我寫的英語方面的文章，更像是面向嚴肅英語學習者和工作者的，跟逼乎的吊性不太吻合。文章通常會有較大比例的英文，例句也比較原生態（不太適合教學那種）。

逼乎上，各路大神的經驗文章或者如何製造奇蹟的經驗之談，更受歡迎。

那種要把你拖入語法泥潭的文章，也頗受有自虐傾向英語學習者的歡迎。

我中學時也抱學習經驗這個心理，讀過大師的經驗，比如李賦寧、王佐良這類前輩的經驗。

然而，並沒有啥卵用。

現如今，我依然連他們的一個腳趾頭都比不上。

他們這代人，不太愛說自己“精通”啥語言，也不太愛說自己如何創造奇蹟。你真看他們的經驗，很普通，那時也沒啥APP，影視資料也少，沒啥炫技。

書店有《吉他三月通》，你就該知道吉他三個月時間不能通。

《中國人學英語不再困難了》，說明中國人學英語還是困難（中文跟西方語言相差太大，有個巨大的鴻溝。跨越這個鴻溝談何容易！）。

《N年精通某門外語》，你就該知道N年精通不了這門外語。

《VC語言N月從入門到精通》，你就知道N月你小白精通不了VC計算機語言。

那些說自己不看字幕就看懂電影（姑且相信你真的聽懂對話了，而不是懂大概），能用英語談論天氣，能用英語應付工作，能唱英文歌曲，甚至某個考試拿個高分，就叫精通英語？可能在逼乎裡，算是精通。逼乎裡面有1年精通語言的，有3年“觸類旁通”精通多門語言的。

接著上篇1840年鴉片戰爭說起。

在我被撕那天上午，我想到一個表達：the 1840 Opium War。當然，鴉片戰爭持續不只這一年。

我覺得這麼修飾欠妥。今天在查詢資料時，就碰到一個這種表達，它用代表性年份來修飾一個多年戰爭，比如 the 18XX war of （independence， 。。。）。

當然，這不能用來表示戰爭期間的某一年；顯然是表示戰爭的，即年份修飾戰爭。在上下文適合的情況下，我想這種修飾表達是完全可以的，前面這個年份不就是起一個identifier/marker的作用嗎。

我們中學當年有兩個年輕男老師，都叫劉俊。一個教化學，一個教英語。教化學那個，就稱為劉化俊。那個英語老師，就不說了，心裡爽。

那種“after the Opium War in 1840， 。。。”表達，邏輯關係真的混亂，不知道這英文想傳遞啥時間關係（如果你英語閱讀量足夠大，通常語感可能會告訴你似乎哪裡不妥，然後你會查證）。

今早，我草草地查了下年份修飾戰爭的表達，查得不多，不完全。

大概有以下幾種：

戰爭（起訖年份）

The American Revolutionary War （1775–1783）， also known as the American War of Independence， was an 18th-century war between Great Britain and its Thirteen Colonies （allied with France） which declared independence as the United States of America。

1。1 如果在一年中發生和結束的（或者主要是一年中發生的）

Yemeni Civil War （1994）這是標題

2。 起訖年份+戰爭

The 1775–1783 American War of Independence drove many Loyalists from the United States to Canada， while emigration from Britain to Canada continued。。。

Women also disguised themselves as men to fight in the 1775-1783 American War of Independence； They included Margaret Corbin and 。。。

2。1 年份甚至還可加上月份：

The May-June 1801 War of the Oranges， or Guerra de las Naranjas in Spanish， was fought in the eastern border region of Portugal， Lasting only 18 days from the initial war declaration to the signing of the Treaty of Badajoz， Spanish military forces， instigated by the government of France under First Consul Bonaparte， and from afar supported by a late arriving French military “corps” in theater， invaded Portugal near the fortress border town of Elvas。

2。2 如果在一年中發生和結束的（或者主要是一年中發生的，上句也是例句）

The 1982 Lebanon War， dubbed Operation Peace for Galilee （Hebrew： מבצע שלום הגליל， or מבצע של“ג‎ Mivtsa Shlom HaGalil or Mivtsa Sheleg） by the Israeli government， later known in Israel as the Lebanon War or the First Lebanon War （Hebrew： מלחמת לבנון הראשונה‎， Milhemet Levanon Harishona）， and known in Lebanon as ”the invasion“ （Arabic： ‎， Al-ijtiyāḥ）， began on 6 June 1982， when the Israel Defense Forces （IDF） invaded southern Lebanon， after repeated attacks and counter-attacks between the Palestine Liberation Organization （PLO） operating in southern Lebanon and the IDF that had caused civilian casualties on both sides of the border。

（main phase： June–September 1982）

3。 戰爭 of 年份

War of 1812， （June 18， 1812–February 17， 1815）， conflict fought between the United States and Great Britain over British violations of U。S。 maritime rights。 It ended with the exchange of ratifications of the Treaty of Ghent。

The War of 1812 was a conflict fought between the United States， the United Kingdom， and their respective allies from June 1812 to February 1815。 Historians in Britain often see it as a minor theater of the Napoleonic Wars； in the United States and Canada， it is seen as a war in its own right。

以上這個也是用主要年份修飾戰爭。想必，the 1812 War between US and GB也無妨吧。

4。 不是修飾關係

After the First World War， in 1919， the powers in Europe sat down to redraw the boundaries of Europe。 Sinn Fein attended these meetings and attempted to have Ireland included in this redrawing。 They argued that Ireland should be granted independence through the treaty。

一戰是1918年底（11月吧）結束的，因此有例句中那麼一說。

這句，不是修飾戰爭了，1919與after the First World War是平起平坐的。

也可以這麼寫：

In 1919， after WWI， the powers of Europe sat down to。。。

類似：From/beginning/starting 1840， a year of the Opium War， China was on its/her way to。。。

多問一句：有沒有那個老師譯文中那種“戰爭 in 年份”的？

肯定有。

但，跟of意味兒不太一樣。

余光中說英語中的介詞是潤滑劑。

有的發動機也燒機油（也是潤滑劑），所以介詞也是可以燃燒的，也能提供動力，當然可以有具體意思（意味兒）啦。

戰爭 in 年份，最直觀的就是表示某個年份中的（發生）的戰爭（戰事）。

戰爭in年份，這個in可能是修飾其他成分的（比如動詞而非戰爭本身，其實與戰爭沒啥關係了）：

The Axis powers knew that they must win the war in 1942——or eventually lose everything。

Had the German‘s begun the war in 1942 or later there might have been a entirely different outcome， this do to the fact that some of those who were not being 。。。

另外，after the Opium War in 1840可能是after （the Opium War in 1840），可能是（after the Opium War） in 1840。所以，上文說的，這個時間關係有點混亂。

試比較：

In 1919， after WWI， the powers of Europe sat down to。。。

After the First World War， in 1919， the powers in Europe sat down to。。。

From/beginning/starting 1840， a year of the Opium War， China was on its/her way to。。。

時間關係，要明晰點吧。

具體的更多的戰爭 in 年份，請自行研究。。。

另外，法律、法案的年份表示，有點類似。
