英譯短語和從句在句中的位置—綜合練習（二）

2。 向忠發之所以被選舉為黨的主要領導人是受共產主義國際的影響，共產國際在選拔幹部時過

度看重候選人的工人身份。

學生在看到這句時，立刻想到“向忠發之所以被選舉為黨的主要領導人”是主要資訊，因為它

是結果。但事實上，英語中除了“尾重句”規則外，還有另外一個規則，那就是放在句首的信

息通常是已知資訊，也就是不重要的資訊。在這一句漢語中，向忠發是黨的早期主要領導人是

已知資訊，他當選的原因則鮮為人知，所以這一句的原因是主要資訊。

國內譯者翻譯如下：

The election of Xiang Zhongfa as the principal leader of the Party was due to the

influence of the Communist International， which put undue emphasis on the class

status of a worker in selecting cadres。

這一句英譯的問題在於把不重要的資訊“in selecting cadres”放在句末，而且容易引起誤

解，讀者會誤以為它修飾前面的名詞“worker”。鑑於這種原因，外籍專家修改如下：

The election of Xiang Zhongfa as the principal leader of the Party was due to the

influence of the Communist International， which in selecting cadres put undue （too

much） emphasis on the workers’ class status。

外籍專家又把“ the class status of a worker”改成“the workers’ class status”，其理

由是前面的短語表明“只有工人才可當選”，後面的短語表達的是“工人優先”。

同時，外籍專家建議把“undue”改成“too much”，因為前面有“due”，當它倆出現在

同一句內時，容易造成理解上的干擾。
