【術語攻略】什麼是定語？
定語
，英語句子的組成成分之一；其實質功能與形容詞功能一致，主要用於修飾名詞性的語法單位，最常見的是修飾名詞或名詞片語。常用作定語的語法單位有：形容詞、形容詞片語、介詞片語、名詞所有格、形容詞性物主代詞、數詞（或量詞）、動詞不定式、動詞不定式短語、現在分詞、現在分詞短語、過去分詞、過去分詞短語，以及形容詞性從句（即“定語從句）等。具體示例如下：（例句中的下劃線部分是定語，加粗字型是其修飾的物件。）
1.定語是形容詞
Julia is
an
intelligent
lady
。
茱莉婭是一位
聰明的
女士。
It is
a
difficult
task
。
這是一項
艱鉅的
任務。
2.定語是形容詞片語
Julia is
a
very intelligent
lady
。
茱莉婭是一位
非常聰明的
女士。
It is
the
most difficult
task
。
這是
最艱鉅的
一項任務。
3.定語是介詞片語
Julia is
a lady
of intelligence
。
茱莉婭是一位
聰明的
女士。
Julia is
a lady
of great intelligence
。
茱莉婭是一位
非常聰明的
女士。
Eric is
the boy
from New York
。
埃裡克就是
從紐約來的

4.定語是名詞所有格
Helen‘s

5.定語是形容詞性物主代詞

9.定語是現在分詞

10.定語是現在分詞短語

became quite popular。

11.定語是過去分詞
There is
a
frightened
horse
in the street。

12.定語是過去分詞短語
The horse
frightened by a mouse
is running around。
被老鼠嚇到的
馬正在到處跑。

13.定語是形容詞性從句
They live in
a village
which has only thirty households
。
他們住在一個
只有三十戶人家的
村子裡。
The woman
（that/who/whom） we met this morning
is Tom’s mother。
今天早上我們遇見的
那個女人是湯姆的媽媽。
She gave me
a bag
in which there were bread and milk
。
她給了我一個
裝著麵包和牛奶的
袋子。
定語可以分為前置定語和後置定語兩種。出現在修飾物件之前的就叫作
前置定語
，出現在修飾物件之後的就是
後置定語
。觀察以上例句不難發現，除了一些習慣用法，被後置的定語一般長度都比較長，內容也比較多。
